Theophila and Marigold have different ways of looking at the world. Examining things with Theophila will usually give the most detail, but Marigold can sometimes pick out the most important details.

There are a bunch of red herrings. The ultimate solution depends on teamwork.

---SOLUTIONS (Warning: major spoilers)---
There are 6 different ways that Theophila can attempt to deal with her chest hair. Only one of them succeeds. Alternatively, if you do all 5 of the ineffective ones, she'll give up and decide to go on her date with her chest hair intact. Either way works.

Method 1: use a knife on Theophila's chest hair. Knives can be found in the kitchen drawer and the dresser drawer in her bedroom. Remember to open the drawer first. This is a bad idea, don't try it at home.

Method 2: use duct tape on Theophila's chest hair. Duct tape can be found in the storage room. This is a bad idea, don't try it at home.

Method 3: MacGyver the vacuum. You'll need to have the vacuum, the duct tape, and the funnel in your inventory. Then use the duct tape on either the vacuum or the funnel. Finally, use the modified vacuum on Theophila's chest hair. This is a bad idea, don't try it at home.

Method 4: Attempt to melt candlewax. Get the candle from the dining room table, get a saucepan from the kitchen cabinet, put the candle in the saucepan, put the saucepan on the stove, and turn on the stove dial. This is a bad idea, don't try it at home. Even if you succeeded at melting candlewax, it would be useless for hair removal.

Method 5: Attempt to use the fan in Theophila's bedroom. First get the shaving cream from the shower rack in the bathroom and use it. Then get the screwdriver from her dresser drawer. Use the screwdriver on the fan. Finally, use the fan on Theophila's chest hair. This is a bad idea, don't try it at home.

Method 6: This is the one. Use the prototype to become Marigold. As Marigold, examine the terrarium in your room. Take the funnel. Ask Theophila about a new toy for Gustav. Become Theophila again by using the prototype. Get the hairbrush from Theophila's dresser drawer and give it to Gustav. Finally, use take Gustav.
